Star Wars Veteran shown in first J.J. Abrams image from the set of Star Wars VII

Who were you really expecting to see? Harrison Ford?

As much as J.J. Abrams loves to be mysterious in pre-film releases he really went out of character here to release this image so early into pre-production. The film isn’t set to be released until 2015. Welcome back R2D2!

Writer / producer/ director Abrams has eagerly given the first glimpse into the new Star Wars VII by revealing a familiar face (well robot) from all six films of the Star Wars franchise. The image is a first look into behind the scenes of the new film in which J.J. Abrams will direct, and is currently deeply into pre-production.

R2D2 first made his acting debut in 1977’s Star Wars: A New Hope with fellow robot C-3PO. Both metallic accomplices are two of Star Wars’ most beloved characters and have made appearances in all Star Wars films adding a comedic quality to the most dangerous of situations. Of course relying on this image doesn’t necessarily mean that the helpful little droid will be in the film, but due to his Star Wars film history the Astromech miracle worker is likely to crop up. It would be rude not to.

In all seriousness though, Abrams is way in-to pre production of the latest installment of the intergalactic franchise. Co-Writer Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams are currently casting for the new film and the release date has been given for December 18, 2015.
