Planet of the Apes Sequel's Debut Trailer Released

Caesar makes his silent return in the debut trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – next year’s primate-centric blockbuster from Cloverfield director Matt Reeves.

In true teaser trailer fashion we’re given very little in terms of plot points, though the official synopsis makes it clear that the ape that caused so much trouble in the first movie is leading a rebellion against the humans who have been whittled down following the outbreak of a deadly virus.

Those of you hoping to get a dollop of eye candy in the form of Freida Pinto (who starred in the first movie) will be sorely disappointed. She’s been replaced by Gary Oldman. Sorry, lads. The same goes ‘fat kid stuck in a lift door face’ James Franco – he’s not reprising his role either. Instead, we’re getting Jason Clarke, Judy Greer and Keri Russell (among others) taking on the new kids at the top of the food chain.

It looks dark, tense and action-packed, and if this trailer is anything to go by the human element will be explored more than the ape side of things. We don’t even get a look at the hairy warriors until the end of the video. But let’s be honest... that final shot is awesome, and judging by the look on Caesar’s face I don’t think he’s after a bucket of bananas.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens on July 11 2014.
