Another Simpsons character to face the axe

It appears that in the next season of The Simpsons (season 25) one of those much beloved characters is to die!

This will not be the first departure in the history of the show; whoever the producers kill off will be joining Ned Flanders’ first wife Maud Flanders, saxophone player Bleeding Gums Murphy and psychologist Dr Marvin Monroe in cartoon heaven.

But who will go? None of the previous characters to take the axe played too much of a big role in the show, however the public has been informed that a “major character” will be going this time.

Al Jean, one of The Simpsons producers  has given us this one clue:

“The actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is.”

That’s hardly much help when the show has won 25 Emmys for voiceover performances since 1992!

Characters who have won include Sideshow Bob, Krusty The Clown, Comic Book Guy, Chief Wiggum, Edna Krabappel and Abe Simpson. All of these characters, despite not being in the show’s main five spots, play a massive part in the Simpsons.

Sideshow Bob is poised as Bart’s arch enemy bringing them to many dramatic stand-offs; Krusty The Clown is the town’s most beloved entertainer, although his methods of entertainment may be flawed; Comic Book Guy is the town’s bitter comic book geek who takes sci-fi (and food) very seriously; Chief Wiggum is the useless police chief of the town who also enjoys a good doughnut and plays father to Ralph Wiggum, Bart’s not so bright (almost) friend; Edna Krabappel is Bart’s chronic-smoker school teacher who just wants a break; and finally Grandpa Simpson is the Simpson family’s senile next of kin who gets plenty of laughs and sometimes even some sympathy.

All of these characters have had some big story lines in the show and definitely will go a miss.

Animated tragedy aside, the next season of The Simpsons will also bring some fun new guest voices including Daniel Radcliffe, Elisabeth Moss, Will Arnett and Kristen Wiig.

The 25th series of the show began in the US last weekend.
