Manic Couponer buys £572.16 worth of Food for 4p.

Everybody makes use of a coupon from time to time to save the pennies. Actually, that’s not true, a lot of people can’t be bothered with them because they can be really irritating, and is it really worth it to save thirty pence? Sure, some people make a bit of a saving, but no-one’s ever saved anything really noteworthy by couponing.

Sometimes on TV shows there’ll be a gag about major savings couponing; for example in 2 Broke Girls, Caroline gets carried away with couponing and actually manages to sort her coupons to the extent the store owes her money for her shopping. Which is fabulous, but completely impossible. Or maybe not, as Jordan Cox, a student, recently proved.

Armed with 470 coupons he’d scoured from the internet and magazines, he hit up his local Tesco. Armed with three trolleys, he filled them all, before rolling up to what would be the longest checkout experience known to man. I actually feel really bad for the person who had to deal with all those coupons; it took over an hour to go through them all at the checkout. But clearly worth it, as the total of his shopping should have been £572.16, but after coupon upon coupon it totalled only FOUR PENCE. That’s a saving of £572.12. This whole experience probably took about three hours, so one way you could look at this, is that it’s kind of like he made £191/hour, which is awesome.

Not finished with being awesome yet however, Jordan then donated all of his purchases to families in need through the charity, Doorstep. Knowing that a 1000th of the UK population can’t afford to eat this Christmas, he wanted to help. And also a little bit prove just how cheaply you can shop. It’s genius, and it’s genuinely going to help people. Although I do have to question the abundance of squirty cream in the picture. There’s like half a trolley of the stuff. It’s great, it’s noble and all that, but the squirty cream part does seem a little… ridiculous. Still, an incredibly impressive feat. Hats off to you Jordan Cox.

Irish Government Asks Unemployed People to Move Away

The Irish government are taking a ‘different’ approach to tackling unemployment and welfare costs by asking around 6000 unemployed people to move away and seek jobs in other EU countries.

One of the receivers of the letter, Mr Alan Douglas an unemployed electrician got urged to move to Coventry. "It made me feel like I was being pushed out of my own country," he told Financial Times

Facebook: Enough of the Internship Post-boasts

When did my newsfeed become my nightmare? A place where all my insecurities and failures and late night feelings of being just not good enough could harmonise in blinking black and white.

University acceptance letters: that’s when it started. While my UCAS screen slammed me with a stony white silence, others capitalised and emoticoned their overwhelming joy at getting that place here, that place there. I waded nobly through this sea of embittered likes and exclamation marks (pressed like myself) and hit refresh on UCAS. Acceptance letters: acceptance likes.

Lollipop man takes the high five road

Lollipop man Bob Slade, 65, has quit following accusations that he is being unsafe in his job. His crime? High-fiving the school children as he was helping them cross the road.

Bob pointed out that his employers, Plymouth council originally told him to make contact with the children and be friendly. Later they changed their minds and told him to stop high-fiving the children. He complained, but the council responded by threatening to suspend him for four weeks. Bob decided to quit instead, saying he was due to retire soon anyway.

"I really enjoyed the job. I have been doing it for more than four years without a single accident," said Bob. "I had to stop giving them high fives about a month before I resigned.

"The parents were all happy for me to do so and I would always ensure their safety but once the council told me I would be suspended, I thought it was best I resigned."

A spokesman for the council said that doing anything other than holding the lollipop and holding an arm out as a signal for cars to stop, was a "safety risk to people crossing the road."

It is unclear how having no lollipop man is safer than having one who helps kids cross the road with encouragement and the occasional high five. But I am sure they know far more about how to get Bob's crossing patrol safe than Bob did. The man in the office beats the man on the street... or the road in this case. It's a story that doesn't leave a sweet taste in your mouth.

High fives all round for Bob, a lollipop man who cared. I am sure he would not let a car mow a kid down just so he could high five them, even without a council memo.

Jobs: Director of Cat Meme Creation Wanted

“Director of Cat Meme Creation” sounds like the self-given job title of an unemployed, eighteen-year old Reddit user who has lured his unfortunate cat into his musty-smelling chamber of wank so he can take pictures of it pushing a little shopping cart.

However, that eighteen year old’s dream is now reality, as ‘Cat Academy’ are now taking applications for this very role.
