And now Ben Stiller has said there’s a real chance of a
Zoolander sequel. Actually, he’s said there’s a script. Apparantly it hasn’t
really come together yet, but there’s a script that he and Justin Theroux
really like; it’s just going to be tricky to make it happen and do justice to
the original movie.
Is a Zoolander sequel really a good plan? Zoolander was a
great movie; it was new, different and hysterical. From the gasoline water
fight explosion, to Stiller and Wilson’s walk-off, to the Relax backed assassination
attempt, to The Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Wanna
Learn to Do Other Stuff Good Too; the film is full of fantastic and original
scenes.
Traditionally when they make a sequel to an iconic movie, it’s
not even close to the first, and more often than not is just downright
terrible. That or they’re slightly less-good carbon copies of the original
(*cough* The Hangover 2 *cough*). And Zoolander has left some pretty tricky,
and pretty fashionable shoes to fill.
Where would the sequel even begin? Would it focus on The
Derek Zoolander Center for Kids Who Can't Read Good and Wanna Learn to Do Other
Stuff Good Too? Will it be more of a story of “retired male model settles down
with family” kind of film, maybe with Derek trying to break back into
modelling? I can’t imagine how or what they’ll do.
Whilst I can’t believe they’ll pull anything anywhere near
as good off for a sequel, I hope to be proven wrong, and I’d definitely watch
it and see. Even if it is just a less-good copy of the first movie, can you
ever watch the gasoline water fight explosion scene too many times?
