Scam Bait; Gazz Wood vs Ban Ki Moon

Like many people, I have a real e-mail address and a junk e-mail address. The real one is for business correspondance, Amazon order confirmations and my phone bill. The junk address (hotmail, of course) is for when a website requires that I sign up or enter a valid e-mail before allowing me to continue. 4od has my junk address, as does Cadburys from when I won that Crispello last month.

Since I use the junk address to indistriminately sign up for things, I receive an inordinate amount of spam. Phishing e-mails, scammers and a number of tragedy striken members of the royal family of Nigeria get hold of me on a daily basis trying to trick me into handing over quick cash. I usually just delete these e-mails, but the other day I received one from Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations!

It was titled “The Truth About Your Fund” and began with the words “Dear Victim…” so obviously I was in.

British Comedy Awards; Winners and Losers Who Won

Thursday night was the Foster sponsored British Comedy Awards, and Wireless sent me along to have a bloody look and try to get near some comedians.

The star-studded event, organised by Avalon Entertainment, was broadcast live on Channel 4 and also to three 42" plasma screens in the press pen, where I was, where we were when Johnny Vegas went mental and said about the smartest thing anyone has for a while.

The Naked Gun Returns, with Ed Helms

Paramount are looking to reboot yet another franchise; this one being The Naked Gun. Originally a TV series called Police Squad, the adventures of Detective Frank Drebin (legendary and sadly missed Leslie Nielsen) never failed to amuse. Apart from the third movie, which wasn't that great. 

The studio want to return Frank to our screens, and they've tapped comedian Ed Helms (The Office, The Hangover series) to step into the brogues and grey wool suit.

You may remember a few weeks ago I wrote a startling and delightfully informative and witty piece about LivesOn, the experimental service which promises that when your heart stops beating, you won't stop tweeting. You can read that thing HERE, but if you're too lazy then let me summarise it;

Watch The Night of the Doctor Prequel Episode

The 50 Anniversary of Doctor Who is fast approaching, with the multimillion pound special set to air at some time on Saturday next week (23rd of November). It marks the first appearance of two Doctors in one episode of the modern era series, and the trailer for it alone cost £1300+ per second. 

The BBC are putting all their eggs into this basket it seems, and to further ramp up the excitement and tension and delight they've released a prequel episode to "Day of the Doctor", titled "Night of the Doctor."

"Cabin in the Woods" Director to Write Netflix' "Daredevil"

Last week Wireless man Ben Mapp informed you, very kindly and with no ulterior motives, that entertainment giant Netflix had reached an agreement with Marvel and Disney to produce four original and exclusive series based on New York based characters.

Luke Cage, Ironfist, Jessica Jones and now, thanks to having re-secured the rights back from Fox, Daredevil! Forget the terrible Mark Steven Johnson Daredevil movie with Ben Affleck in it. Ben Affleck's an Oscar winning Batman now and Mark Steven Johnson lives in a fridge box under a motorway probably. Cast it as far from your mind as it will go, because today Netflix has announced that the first name in negotiations to write Daredevil is none other than Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard.

I've already come at you with the knowledge that Netflix and Marvel's miniseries based on the Man Without Fear Daredevil will be written by Drew Goddard (Lost, Buffy, Cabin in the Woods) but now Wireless is here to let you know that one of the other series also has a writer attached.

Netflix have partnered with Marvel & Disney to bring 4 exclusive superhero tales to your TV. The heroes involved are the aforementioned Daredevil along with Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. 

The Last Movie Ever Rented From Blockbuster...

Blockbuster is dead. There's no kinder way to say it than that.

They were slow off the mark with internet integration, they didn't get into home delivery until well too late and all that malarky with selling second hand games was just embarrassing. If you still have a copy of King Ralph or something in the back of a bookcase, then you have won. There's no need to rewind, because now the kindest thing we can do is turn our backs on Blockbuster and let it rest in peace.

"I AM CULTURE!" - Stewart Lee at the Leicester Square Theatre

It is very difficult to attempt a review any of Stewart Lee's stand up. It is purposely devised and performed in such a way as to alienate as many of the people who might happen upon it as possible. If Stewart Lee had his way, and the ability to feed his family was no object, he would play to rooms of two people or less and those people would laugh all of the moisture from their bodies and be wheeled out with the most amazing six-packs you'd have ever seen.

He is very funny, but only if you like that sort of thing. I do like it, a great deal, but therein lies the problem.

Christmas is coming, the goose has got 100% on GTA V and can’t log in to multiplayer online. He needs something else to do and he hasn’t got long before someone kills and eats him. Luckily for the goose in this strained metaphor, the XBOX One and PS4 are both released pre-Christmas so he can while away his final hours playing Titanfall. Or Infamous: Second Son, depending on the console he gets.

It’s chuffing freezing, the clocks have gone back and there’s the slightest tremor of fear in the air as everyone prepares to grind to a screaming skidding halt at the merest mention of the word Snow. You might think, with the hot hot heat of the blockbuster season well behind us, that big releases would have slowed down to one a week.

Saw 8 in Development

The first movie was friggin' tremendous and then there were some other movies afterwards as well, but the Saw franchise never seemed to slow down in terms of box office take. The ingenious traps and raspy voice helped propel the enigmatic Jigsaw killer right into the VIP Room of Halloween Horror Movie Icons, sitting behind Freddy and Jason but in front of Pinhead and Chucky.

Captain America 2 Will Impact Agents of SHIELD

Somewhat beleaguered Marvel TV vehicle "Agents of SHIELD" might well get one of the kicks up the arse it needs to achieve greatness in the form of a direct connection to Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

It's no secret that Agents of SHIELD hasn't been doing the gangbusters business of every other Marvel property brought to life on a screen, and critics haven't exactly been very kind to the show. The cast in particular, apart from Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, have been in for a right drubbing. If Marvel and parent company Disney want to keep the show going as their Mid-Movie Offering, they need it to be essential viewing. 

"Thor" Actress Jaimie Alexander Rumoured for Wonder Woman

Thor 2: The Darkworld made over £68,500,000 this weekend, and it's not even out in American yet, but actress Jaimie Alexander who plays female Lady Sif maybe be about to swap her shield for... another... different kind of shield. And some rope.

Alexander was at the Comikaze Expo this weekend when she revealed she'd been in talks with Warner Bros about the possibility of her playing Wonder Woman, and the other possibility of her debut coming in Batman vs Superman. She didn't those things overtly, because no one ever does unless they're Samuel L. Jackson, but she admitted to knowing the plot of the upcoming DC Comics movie which is set to star Ben Affleck as Batman and a returning Henry Cavill as Superman.

Peter Capaldi May Leave Doctor Who After Just 13 Episodes

Despite having only been announced as the new Doctor a few months ago, Scottish actor Peter Capaldi already has something of a Regenerate-by date on his time as a time traveler.

Show runner Stephen Moffat has raised concerns that we'll be seeing a 13th Doctor before this time next year by mentioning the length of Capaldi's contract in an interview. He has since confirmed that The Thick of It star is signed on to play The Doctor for just 13 episodes, to be split into two 6 episodes series and one special over 2014. After which he will either go all orange and fizzy and turn into someone else or, if he's popular enough, stick around for a wee while longer.

For some people, the greatest thing you can achieve in life is to become in some way famous. People will due all manner of humiliating and morally reprehensible things just to have the limelight shone in their direction for even the most fleeting of moments. They'll queue, in the rain, for hour after hour just for the chance to warble at a desk full of people whose only discernible talent is sitting behind a desk judging whether or not other people have any discernible talent.

Idris Elba to Battle Dinosaurs in Jurassic World

We're already well into the casting of Jurassic World in which dinosaurs presumably go mental and destroy London while America bravely fights them off.

Or not! Because rumour has it that British actor and all around excellent bad ass gentleman Idris Elba has been signed up to play a major role in the movie. He's from Hackney, which before the hipsters all moved in looked a bit like a Triceratops had been at it for a while, so he's not likely to get behind wrecking the place further. Not now it's got all those antique shops.

Batman: Arkham Origins Review

Like many nerds with money to burn, I pre-ordered Batman: Arkham Origins ages ago and as such my forward planning was rewarded when the slightly angry looking postman dropped it off this morning; the day of release.

If you’re not familiar with the franchise, Batman: Arkham Something is now three games (this new one being the third) and has been showered with so many awards you’d think the CEO of Warner Bros Games was Adele. You play The Goddamn Batman as you zip around an island asylum and then an Escape of LA style city-based prison, punching criminals in their turkey faces and growling.

The Day of the Doctor to be Shown in Cinemas in 3D

The 50th Anniversary episode Doctor Who comes to your television/laptop screen on November 23rd, and by all accounts it's gonna be a right doozy. 

(Take a deep breath) Somehow not content with being the anniversary show of one of Britain's longest running and most dearly held TV shows, and dissatisfied with being the first episode in the modern Doctor Who franchise to feature a team-up between the current Doctor and a past incarnation, AND finding the idea of starring screen legend John Hurt a bit on the underwhelming side, "Day of the Doctor" has gone and powered itself up one more level.
